I’m a Baltimore City native currently residing in Baltimore County at the moment. I’m a well-read, theory-analyzing enthusiast, & intersectional black feminist academic preparing to defend myself against Cathy Brennan who filed criminal charges against me on April 6th, 2013 for “violation of peace order terms.” Being that I just graduated and work less than 21 hours per week, I need a little help with defense lawyer expenses.

Here’s the background information:

January 1, 2013—
Cathy Brennan filed a peace order against me on the terms of internet harassment. After I was summoned to court and the peace order was issued (which stated I was no longer able to directly contact Brennan via any outlet until June 9th), Brennan contacted a community, internet-based news outlet to further draw attention to the peace order issue. The article was published with a one-sided point of view (not including all the facts or Brennan’s extensive history of targeting transgender women and their allies), in which Brennan capitalized on the opportunity to produce libelous sources. Such sources have given her many opportunities to label me as a “violent queer” to the public as well as on the internet.

March 21, 2013—
Received a direct notification from Brennan stating “see you in court” after posting a tweet linking an article about the danger of payday loan lenders.

April 27, 2013—
Brennan directly contacts me through Twitter a total of 19 times from 3:26pm to 4:37pm, responding to various tweets I posted. All notifications occurring within an average of every 3 minutes.

For those who are unaware of the abusive pathology of Cathy Brennan can visit this rational wiki webpage. Sorry for not providing a more neutral source about Brennan, but this most accurately describes her pathological abusiveness on the internet.

Where will these funds specifically go towards?—

I was referred to him by someone I trust, however he has a 75 dollar consultation fee right off the bat, and a retainer fee that he hasn’t yet shared with me until he hears all the facts. However, he has shared with me that his services are $350 an hour.

I am not exactly sure how much I should be asking for at this moment, which is why I am starting off small with hopes this foolishness doesn’t go on longer than 2 days.

He’s located in Rockville, MD which is about an hour train ride from me since I don’t have a car. Transportation expenses (MARC Train & DC Metro fares) will also be covered.

Please help me win this battle against Cathy Brennan, and really for anyone that has been personally victimized by her on and off the internet. Please help me win this battle for every person that she has publicly outed, and every every individual that she has legally manipulated.

I don’t have any fancy talents, HOWEVER I do own a book collection that would make a feminist very jealous. I will be providing copies of feminist related reading material for individuals with “star” donations.

I recently picked up some in-flight reading material, which included Jet magazine’s latest issue (April 29, 2013) - a special report on the invisibility of missing black children.

While reading, I was stunned to see that the news section of the magazine not only covered trans folks and restroom use, but also a story from a 29-year-old trans woman of color named Brandy Ahzionae.

In the one-page profile (on page 15), Brandy opens up about her journey towards womanhood, about having to leave home due to a lack of acceptance of her gender, about “turn[ing] to the streets,” about using drugs and partying as a means to cope and about daring to survive this hostile world by engaging in the sex trade.

“My life shifted when I met a group of fellow trans sisters who provided love I’d never felt before,” Brandi says. “They made me feel comfortable about fully transitioning.”

Never underestimate the transformative power of sisterhood. We need more spaces dedicated to collective growth, learning and pro-sisterhood intent.

To have this story featured in a legendary black publication, one read by many black households, is a feat. When our stories are told not only in “mainstream press” (which is way far behind) and by the “LGBT mainstream” (which is also failing us and trans and queer folk of color miserably), but in the publications read by communities of color, true acceptance and growth occurs.

We hear often about the violent exiling of trans women of color, we hear about our vulnerability when it comes to HIV/AIDS, homelessness, sex work and sex trade, lack of employment, housing, shelter and education. But what we do not hear often is the stories and the voices of black trans women like Brandi, like Kiara St. James and Tanya Walker and numerous other sisters of color. My voice, Laverne Cox’s voice, Isis King’s voice is not enough.

I applaud you, my dear sister Brandi, for daring to be seen, for sharing your story with all of us, for carrying the torch and legacy of active resistance and survival that trans women of color have long uplifted. I also applaud the editors of Jet for recognizing Brandi’s resilience and brilliance - and embracing trans women as your sisters and daughters too.

Now we must call on the rest of our communities to do this embracing work and ignite change for all of our sisters.
